Is it safe to build and deploy with an empty licenses.licx?
posted

Some time back I ran the project upgrade utility on my solution to updated to the latest Infragistics release. I did not notice that this utility cleared the content of the licenses.licx file.

From what I understand this content is need to ensure that runtime license keys are embedded in the assembly for licensed controls. Yet I have been building and deploying the project and there have been no reports of license related errors.

Can you help me by answering these questions:

  • How does the above scenario work?
  • When do the WPF control do a license check?
  • Is it safe for me to continue to build and deploy with an empty licenses.licx, and if not what is the best strategy for repopulating the file?

Thank you for your help

    Hello Murray,

I have been looking into your enquiry and the Version Utility’s behavior is expected, since the license file is a Visual Studio functionality, on which we do not rely. Since there is a licensing information in the assemblies themselves, we use different ways for verifying the validity of the products that use them, however due to security concerns I cannot put them out here.

Regarding your third, I can suggest you, like the Version Utility, keep an empty license file when developing and deploying in order to avoid any Visual Studio issues when changing releases and specific versions.

Please let me know if you require any further assistance on the matter.
