Displaying the total in a column footer and formatting the number to have appropriate commas works fine.
The problem i'm having is when i export my grid to PDF. The commas seem to be replaced by their ascii value "%20" which makes my pdf document really ugly.
It is really weird that the commas in the body of the grid seem to be displayed fine when exported to PDF. It is only the commas within the numbers in the FOOTER that seem to be having this problem.

This looks like something that you should submit a support request about. I can't confirm that it's a bug, but I suspect it may be. Developer Support can likely also provide you with a workaround if you ask for one, likely by handling events on the WebGridDocumentExporter.
