"parent node is null" error (without IE 8 Compatibility)

I have an user control placed inside an update panel the user control contains a simple  ultarwebgrid (cells editable) and a check box and a text box with two buttons. When ever I do postback I get the following error "parent node is null" . This runs fine in Firefox and IE 8 with compatibilty mode on.  Any idea why this is happening.
