webresource.axd?= Performance Problem

When issuing a .beginEdit() call via JavaScript (CSOM), the browser is displaying a "Downloading picture ... WebResource.axd?=..." message in the status bar, and taking a terribly long time to complete.

Is there any way to resolve this problem?
