Whentrying to upgrade from version 9.2 to version 10.3 the upgrade utility only gets as far as
02:49:49: Gathering volume and assembly information. - then it stops. Any thoughts or ideas?

I have tested upgrading serveral projects from 9.2 to 10.3 and they have been successful. This may or may not have something to do with sourcecode.
Please refer to this documentation on how to upgrade a project manually:

If you can provide a sample that reproduces the issue, then I can look at why the upgrade utility stops.
If the upgrade utility for ASP .Net is anything like the one for Silverlight, it is a POS and you should just bite the bullet and upgrade by hand. Took me about a day for our Silverlight project.
