Appointments reminders and appointment variance

I have two questions.

1).How to invoke reminders only from CalendarInfo in case of no open UltarWinSchedule control? I mean that there are appointments in CalendarInfo with relevant reminder to current time and the reminders not pop up only when showing a UltarWinSchedule control (DayView or Weekview, etc).

2)   Is recurrence root appointment can be a variance ? I ask it because I found out that it's not possible to change the recurrence root appointment  to variance

Please advise.
