Explorer Bar and what else

What else is used when the explorer bar is used as navigation and as users click a new screen appears, based on the selection, usually on the right side of the explorer bar. Is it a tab control displaying certain tabs and the tabs are invisible? Basically outlook you can view email then the calendar in the same screen at different times.
