I give up: how do change the caption of a ribbon tab in design mode. Using the custom property editor or just the properties changes the caption in desing mode, but when run, the captions revert back to old.

It sounds like you may have SaveSettings set to True on the UltraToolbarsManager and the version of your application is not changing when you rebuild. If so, the settings from your last run of the application will be loaded and the changes made in the designer will be discarded. Either temporarily set SaveSettings to False while designing the Form or change the version of your application to something like '1.0.*' so a unique version number is created each time you build, a new location is used for the settings file, and the last saved settings will never be loaded after a rebuild.
