It's hard to say without seeing your xaml for the content pane. A guess would be that you have the datagrid in an element that measures/arranges the content with an infinite width (e.g. a grid with a columndefinition whose width is auto, a horizontal stackpanel, a scrollviewer whose horizontalscrollbarvisibility is not disabled, etc.).
