I know it is possible to customize the PageContentAreaTooSmall Resource String, but is there a way to hook into an event or something to handle it in code?

The size is checked when pagination begins on the Embedded Visual Report Section this is when the content is replaced. In the pagination started event of the section e.VisualPaginator.CurrentPageDataContext will return null if the content is replaced. This event occurs after the report has begun printing.
