Question regarding fixed records that contain children
posted

I have a XamDataGrid (12.2.20122.2089) that I bind a hierarchical set of data to.  I have rows that can contain children that can contain children that can contain children and so on.  The children rows have the same columns as the parent and this never changes.  I am trying to allow rows to be 'pinned' or fixed to the top or bottom as the user sees fit, however when rows that contain children are pinned/fixed, the behaviour becomes undesirable.

I have done some research and found the following explanation.

http://help.infragistics.com/Help/NetAdvantage/WPF/2012.1/CLR4.0/html/xamDataPresenter_About_Fixed_Non_Scrolling_Records.html

The following is particularily interesting as I believe it explains the behaviour I am seeing.

Note: Only root-level records can be fixed if you enable nested panels.

  • If your end users fix multiple records to the top and they expand one of the fixed records, subsequent fixed records (closest to the scrollable area) will become scrollable. If your end users collapse the expanded record, the subsequent fixed records will be fixed again.
  • If your end users fix multiple records to the bottom and they expand one of the fixed records, the expanded record and preceding fixed record (closest to the scrollable area) will become scrollable. If your end users collapse the expanded record, the subsequent fixed records will be fixed again.

So basically my problem is with this behaviour.  I have four rows pinned to the top of the grid, and the second one has children, if I expand it the subsequent rows become scrollable.  This behaviour is undesirable for what we are trying to achieve with the grid.  We want a top or bottom fixed row area that allows rows to expand/collapse the same as though they were in the scrollable area.

So, is there anyway to get around this behaviour and make the grid behave in a more desirable fashion?  I fail to see how this default behaviour is desired by anyone implementing pinning where rows may have children.  Are there any plans to change this behaviour, or perhaps it has already been done and a new release of the controls might fix it?

Thanks

    Hello Mike,

After looking into this and doing some research, it has been determined to be a new product idea. You can suggest new product ideas for future versions (or vote for existing ones) at <http://ideas.infragistics.com>.

There are many benefits to submitting an product idea:

    -          Direct communication with our product management team regarding your product idea.

    -          Notifications whenever new information regarding your idea becomes available.

    -          Ability to vote on your favorite product ideas to let us know which ones are the most important to you.  You will have ten votes for this and can change which ideas you are voting for at any time.

    -          Allow you to shape the future of our products by requesting new controls and products altogether.

    -          You and other developers can discuss existing product ideas with members of our Product Management team.

    Steps to create your idea:

    1. Log into the Infragistics Product Idea site at http://ideas.infragistics.com (creating a new login if needed).
    2. Navigate to the product / platform channel of your choice (e.g. WPF, Windows Forms, ASP.NET, HTML5 / Ignite UI, iOS / NucliOS, etc.)
    3. Add your product idea and be sure to be specific and provide as much detail as possible. Explain the context in which a feature would be used, why it is needed, why it can’t be accomplished today, and who would benefit from it. You can even add screenshots to build a stronger case. Remember that for your suggestion to be successful, you need other members of the community to vote for it. Be convincing!

The Product Idea site puts you in the driver’s seat and allows you to track the progress of your ideas at any time, see how many votes it got, read comments from other developers in the community, and see if someone from the product team has additional questions for you.
