extending Field class

Hi, I am trying to extend the Field class to create custom column types that can be used in XamDataGrid.

<igDP:XamDataGrid.FieldLayouts>

<igDP:FieldLayout>
<igDP:FieldLayout.Fields>
<CustomGrid:MyCustomField Name="col1" />

Let me know if this is possible. any examples will be of great help.
