I've got a problem. One of the datagrids a website which I am developing, doesn't show any rows >ever< when viewed under the new Google Chrome browser that was released earlier today.
Has anyone else noticed any inconsistences with the Infragistics controls and Google Chrome?
I've published two screenshots on my review of Google Chrome here: http://blog.evolvedsoftwarestudios.com/2008/09/02/web-browser-wars-room-for-one-more-google-launch-google-chrome/ (scroll right down to the last two images in the article).
Hello,
I have just gone through your blog post - great content there. I also was probably one of the first to download and try Google Chrome and I am really impressed by the speed and simplicity of the browser, plus several great ideas they have to save space (pressing Ctrl +K for search goes back to address bar with ? prefix - clever stuff).
Google Chrome's engine is based on WebKit - this is the open source engine that powers the Safari browser. So while we of course cannot make any official statements for Chrome at this very moment, you will typically expect the controls we ship that work on Safari to generally work in Chrome. UltraWebGrid has parts of it that are not working on Safari yet, hence the problem you experience.
Needless to say, Safari and Google Chrome support will be moving up the priority list and we will do our best to be better in this area. In fact, almost 100% of the stuff we will be going to ship soon already works fine in both Chrome and Safari - you can test this with the CTP versions of WebDataTree and WebDataGrid and our brand new Drag & Drop framework here (a lot of this stuff and much more will ship in the next releases we have)
https://ko.infragistics.com/samples/aspnet/drag-drop-framework/overview
So basically - yes, we are watching Chrome (and WebKit / Safari in general) closely and will be doing our best to support that, the way we support FireFox/Mozilla and IE.
We are currently targeting first week of November to ship our 2008 Volume 3 that will include our new Aikido based WebDataGrid.
As for Chrome, we have done some preliminary testing of our new WebDataGrid on it. Since all Aikido controls are designed to support Safari, we have been seeing same results on both Safari and Chrome for the most part. Due to the arrival of Chrome after our test plans had been finalized for this release, we were not able to do a complete round of testing on Chrome as we would like. But since Chrome is based on Safari WebKit, I expect to see it work no differently that it would do on Safari.
Taz.
Hi Taz,
Thanks for responding and giving your insights into the development process. There are a couple of issues that this brings up however:
1. Are the Aikido controls a direct drop-in replacement to the exiting Web Grid controls? The issue is that the Web Grid doesn't work >almost at all< on Chrome (and I assume by implication they are bugged on Safari too). Unfortunately this makes them completely useless for almost all non-intranet web applications as an ever increasing quantity of users migrate to Chrome. What is the relationship between "Aikido" and the current ASP.NET Web controls?
2. Am I right that the next release will not explicitally support Google Chrome but there are plans to thoroughly test on Safari?
I've had to drop Infragistics for the current project I'm working on as the lack of Chrome support is a deal breaker. This is dissapointing since the rest of the Infragistics framework appears to be ok.
Thanks,
Mike
I've answered part of my own question on 1. Aikido Framework. It's the new technology framework from Infragistics. Ok, I got that.
Regarding Aikido's support of Google Chrome and Safari, I can only urge you to make sure that Google Chrome is well tested and supported as many of our customers are starting to adopt it.
Taz-
You mentioned that the WebGrid is coming out with 2008.3 (in Nov). So when is the new UltraWebGrid coming out ... sure aikido is new, shiny, and functional - but it sure gives the community a lot of work to convert projects, etc.
Thanks
Chad
dhaggard-
Thanks for checking it out. Yeah Opera does not have a large market share, unless if you have some silly clients that would like to use it ... but they can get over it.
Thanks for the response... yes there are several reasons why the Aikido version is inferior to the original version. Here is a snapshot of the reasons:
See my previous post in this thread from Nov. 25, 2008 for more.... So unfortunately the Aikido version is lacking as well - oh and the fact that there would be a rework on 100% of the code ... that is not a workable solution.
Hi Dhaggard,Chad,
We were not able to get to this item for 2009 Volume 1 release, as our feature requests for other controls/feature remained very high. We did some testing and in order to support WebGrid in AJAX mode over WebKit we will have to do a significant amount of dev effort, and to keep the features that we were able to ship in 9.1, we had to pull this one out.
However, trying to wrap the grid inside of an UpdatePanel and let that take care of converting it into an AJAX call back for the grid while the WebGrid be rendered as non-ajax, the results were quite different.
So, I would recommend you to try putting the WebGrid in an UpdatePanel to support AJAX if that is the issue that you are running into. However, that is still not a supported environment either for the WebGrid, but you should be able to see the data. I am sure you must have noticed by now already that we were able to get our ASP.NET AJAX controls built on top of the Aikido framewrok support in both Safari and Chrome. Althought the WebDataGrid is not as feature rich at the moment as the WebGrid, but if that suits the need that you are looking for and you have an immediate need to support Chrome & Safari, then that would be the way to go. If there is a feature missing in the WebDataGrid because of which you can't convert, please feel free to shoot me an email : murtazaa@infragistics.com
Thanks again for your inputs.

I had not tried Opera, but I just did. The grid works in Opera. However, the WebAppStylist does not. My grid-- which is so pretty in Firefox and IE, with scrolling and pretty colors and easy-to-read fonts-- is just an ugly table in Opera with Times font. <yuck!>
But since Opera has a whopping 0.7% market share, and (unless something big happens) doesn't show any sign of gaining any, I'm not to worried about it.
However, Chrome is up to 1.23% in its short lifespan, and shows all the signs of one day catching and/or overtaking Firefox. Wisdom would indicate Chrome support is going to be a big deal.
dhaggard -
Did you happen to try Opera as well?
Any update???
-Chad
I have upgraded to 2009.1 for ASP.NET. I also just downloaded and installed the newest Google Chrome beta (1.0.154.53)
I hoped, but it didn't happen. My IG-controlled pages with the UltraWebGrid still do not work in Chrome.
Any word on Chrome/Safari progress?
