Sorting and grouping are related since it must sort to do a groupby.

I just wonder why the groupping is set into the sortedColumns...

You can do a "Group By" programatically...

 ultraGrid1.DisplayLayout.Bands[0].SortedColumns.Add("ColumnName", false, true);

 where you need to replace "ColumnName" by the "Clients" column in  your case... whatever be the real name of the column.

Oh, I'm sorry... I think I misunderstood the subject of this conversation... What I'm looking for is a way of setting programmaticaly a column as GroupBy.

 For instance, if I click the "By clients" button group all by clients, instead of having to drag the Clients column into the group by box.

I did a small "work around" to get this functionality... You could probably try that if it satisfies your requirement.... This is what I did:

1.  Add an unbound column to the grid (in my case I made it the first column).  Add a button to this column (I captioned it "Add Row"). You could also use a image that has a "+" sign to save some space...
2. Suppose there are 5 rows under the group, make the button invisible for the first four rows and make it visible for the last row.
3. On clicking the "Add Row" button, add a new row to the list that is bound to it.  In my case, the grid was bound to a list of objects; I guess its pretty simple if you are using a dataset too.
4. If you want to add a new group itself, you can have a button outside the grid that says "Add Group".  You can add a new object that is initialized for the new group to the bound list when the button is clicked and refresh the grid.
5. Set the appropriate row as active so that its ready for entry.
