I'm using VB 2010 - Winforms and just did an installation of the Trial version of Infragistics controls. I want to test if the controls will help speed up my development.
I had problems with installation of the Indigo Studio because my Silverlight was not up-to-date. After the installation completed, I attempted to add a control to a copy of one of my Windows Forms projects (after I changed the target framework to version 4), and received the error Failed to create component.
I found some references to older (2009) articles about setting the Specific Version option to False on all Infragistics References and to clean out the licenses.licx file. I was able to set the references to false but could not find a licenses.licx file associated with my project. Still errors.
So I reset my Windows 7 Pro SP1 machine to a restore point from before the installation. I upgraded my Explorer and Silverlight before installing again. Reinstalled and had the same problem.
I created a new project with one form and made sure it was referencing .Net 4 (not client), added a control and again received an error. Of the dozen or so controls I have tried, only the UltraProgressBar and UltraScrollBar will insert on the form. I can see the References being added in the Solution Explorer but the error still shows up.
One example of the message is below.
If anyone has any ideas what I can try to test the controls, I would appreciate it. TIA, rasinc.
Hi,
Thank you for posting in our forums.
Please let me know the following details:
- What Infragistics version did you try to run?
- What version of visual studio do you use?
- Is the Infragistics.License assembly is in the GAC (C:\Windows\assembly)?
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Hi Dimitar,
Thank you for responding.
The Infragistics version is 2015.1. I just downloaded it for the first time on Monday. I didn't realise at the time it was a new version for you as well.
I am using VS2010 programming in VB Winforms. Version from Help, About... is 10.0.40219.1 SP1Rel and .Net Framework listed here is 4.0.30319 SP1Rel.
There are two entries in the GAC for Infragistics. Infragistics.License version 1.0.5005.10 and Infragistics. Web.Mvc version 2.15.1.1005 (which I assume is not going to be needed by me as I am not doing web development but I installed the Ultimate Trial version and installed all components that did not flag problems because of my VS version 2010.
Other info that might or might not help. I have rebooted my computer since installation.
I have been able to run the Indigo Studio and create a couple of screens that will run without error.
I opened the Windows Forms Startup Solution and it started but the form will not display (Ultrapanel1 and UltraExplorerBar are either undeclared or was never assigned error). This is similar to other solutions I have tried to open (eg. samples downloaded from your website).
Today, the Toolbox does not include any Infragistics controls, yesterday it did. I pulled up a test project that was created yesterday and I put the UltraProgessBar and UltraScrollBar on the form and they still exist, the references in the Solution Explorer still exist but the controls cannot be selected to attempt to add to the form. I closed it and it wanted to save the licenses.licx file. I let it and now it has information in it about the scrollbar and progressbar with version, culture and publickeytoken. I closed VS and ran the Create Visual Studio Toolbox Tab utility again and the controls are back but I still cannot add even the UltraLabel control.
When I tried to open the Windows Forms Samples (Local) 2015.1 application from the Start menu, it gave me the error below. I can continue but it gives me another error message when I click on VB. I had to attach the two images as a zip file as the forum will not allow two images to display.
I am logged in as a local and domain administrator and was when I installed on Monday.
In Regedit under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, I can see the Infragistics.License Key but cannot open it. Error is below as well. Same error in Infragistics\Installer... on all GUIDs and 2015.1\VersionUtility but I can see the key for PlatformInstaller. I can see other keys down to the bottom level in the same area for other programs. I can see all levels under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Infragistics without error. I didn't look any further.
I am not sure what other info I can provide now. If you need more information or have an idea of what to do, let me know, and thank you again for trying to help. rasinc.
Sorry, now that I have reinstalled, I cannot complete the adding of permissions. It fails. I should add, before I reinstalled I re-downloaded the installation program just in case there was something wrong with the original download.
Indigo Studio still works fine.
Thank you for the reply.
I have asked our engineering team for assistance on this issue. We are not really sure what is causing this issue as the code for adding the registry keys hasn’t been changed for years and we don’t set any explicit permissions on the keys. It’s just creates them and the permissions that are going to be assigned to it will be what comes naturally when the key is created. Please delete the key and then try to re-install the product from as an administrator and see if the key is still restricted. If it is then probably something on your machine is defaulting the permissions to be this way.
Dimitar, thank you for getting back to me again.
I finally figured out to change the Owner first, then refresh the registry and then try to change the permissions. I did that on every single key under Infragistics and Infragistics.License. You didn't tell me what the permissions should be so I set it up for full access for System and desktop Administrators. All the Indigo_xxx keys allow me to get into them and see what is there but the other two did not.
It didn't help.
I repaired the installation. Didn't help.
I uninstalled using the original installation program. I then downloaded and ran MalwareBytes. It only flagged the Dell System Detect program. So I uninstalled it, then uninstalled MalwareBytes.
I rebooted and I reran the installation (this time from the local hard drive) and the program is still giving me the same problems. All the keys I set permissions on before, have them gone again. Owner was changed to "Unable to display current owner".
I opened the AppStylist for Windows Forms but it indicated License Error.
I am a domain and local admin when logged in. All other software I install runs fine, including my own.
I don't know what to do other than give up and go back to the MS controls. The only other option I can think of is if you have a small utility that specifically sets up the proper registry keys, I can use it to set them up outside of the installation program to see if that would work. If you have them in a *.reg file, I can manually import them too. If you have any other options before I give up, I would greatly appreciate it.
On my machine for the permissions I have four groups – Administrators, Users, SYSTEM and CREATOR OWNER (see attached screenshot). This is the same for all Infragistics registry keys I have. Administrators and SYSTEM have full access, Users have read permissions and CREATOR OWNER has special permissions. The owner for these keys is the Administrators group. Please try to set the permissions like that and try to run the Appstylist or the Samples Browser explicitly as an administrator. If you didn’t run Appstylist as an administrator the last time you test it maybe it failed, because you didn’t add permissions for the Users group. Hopefully this time it will be able to run without any issues.
Let me know if this fixes your issue. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you. I will try adding USERS and CREATOR OWNER. I had not added them before.
I think I am going to get my IT person involved in this over the next couple of days. It seems this issue is so weird, it is likely there is an issue on my system as you mentioned. I will try what you suggest above and possibly try the install using a desktop admin user id instead of my domain user in case there is an issue with the user account.
I did decide to try installing on my notebook (Win8.1 Pro, 64 bit). I was apprehensive about doing that after the problems on this machine. However, while I didn't have a lot of time to test, I could open and run the startup app and add your controls to a test project. I did install using my domain userid on the notebook as well, so I am not sure it is a user account problem as I mentioned above but I will try to eliminate it anyway.
I will get back to you when I have a chance to get to the office and do all this.
I am really glad that you have resolved your issue. Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any additional questions.
Thank you for using Infragistics.
Well, I think I am able to work now. I only have 19 days of the trial left but I'll have to try to work in the time to concentrate on it. Last week was my easy week this month.
I am able to add controls to a project now on my main machine, the AppStylist for Windows Forms opens and I can get into and work with Indigo Studio. The trick was all the proper permissions had to be added manually to everything in CLASSES_ROOT, one key at a time. Not having Users was probably the issue when I set them up yesterday.
Thank you for the help.
I am glad to hear that you were able to successfully install it on your notebook. It is possible that the account is causing the issue. Let me know what are the results from installing from your desktop admin user or if changing the permissions the way I suggested helps you resolve this issue.
