StackOverflow Exception loading HighDensityChart with Discrete data

We found what seems to be a bug when trying to display certain kind of data with the HighDensity Series on the XamDataChart.

Our data has discrete values on Y (3, 5, 7, etc), and many values on X on a small range.

Apparently the High Density Chart can not handle this kind of data, but we would expect a message saying the data is not good for a High Density Chart and not an exception.

Attached you can find a simple Solution reproducing the error.

PS: This is happening with the base version of Infragistics 15.2

I have logged this behavior in our tracking system with ID 212575 and the following case was created for you: CAS-168835-D6G3N5. The next step will be for a developer to review my investigation and confirm my findings or to offer a fix, or other resolution.

Hi Viviana,

I have a response from the development team and they claim that this behavior is not going to be fixed because of a structures that are used and because fixing it will have negative impact on most common cases. But they provided me with a workaround. Here is the answer:

"The normal mode of the HighDensityScatter series uses KD-trees to enhance processing efficiency. The sample presented contains data where there is an extreme amount of points containing exactly the same Y coordinate. This creates a very unbalanced tree to the point where some of the recursion performed will overflow the stack. We could shift this to be a memory limited operation, rather than a stack limited operation, however, if you have this degenerate scenario with a very unbalanced tree, then it will actually end up being a detriment to performance, rather than an acceleration, so this fix is not desirable.

In stead, you can leverage a mode whereby the HighDensityScatter series skips creating this internal data structure and instead processes the data more directly. The sample in question does not have a sufficient amount of data that it is prohibitive to skip creating these data structures. To enable this, please set UseBruteForce to true on the series. Note, that this also disables the progressive loading mode, so you will need to hide the progress bar from the get go."

Following this instructions I have modified the sample that you can find in the attachments. Please look at it and provide us some feedback. Any other questions are welcome.
