What do you mean by a "dedicated recent item tool"?
I'm looking after a RecentItemTool (similar to ButtonTool, but with the recent item behavior).
I'm still not clear on what recent item behavior means but I'm guessing that you're asking for a tool that is similar to the things you see in the recent documents of Word where it displays a pin button. If that is the case then no that is not something currently offered. You may submit a request for this feature here.
