You may face numerous challenges along the way like handling and manipulating complex data structures, especially when dealing with large data sets; dealing with multiple columns or complex data types; determining the appropriate sorting and filtering algorithms, handling user interactions, and more. In this article, then, I will explore five must-have features for customizing the column elements within Ignite UI for Angular Grid: multi-column headers, collapsible column headers, Selection, Pinning, and Summaries. Extending the concept that each grid consists of Columns and Rows for data representation, I am now focusing on Columns only. However, Row features will be explored in-depth in another article. Key Article Pillars: What is an Angular grid What is an Angular grid column-based feature The best 5 features and how to use them Multi-column headers Collapsible column headers Column selection Column pinning Column summaries Summary What Is Angular Grid? Angular Grid is a powerful and flexible component that allows you to display and manipulate tabular data in your web applications. It offers a rich set of features such as sorting, filtering, editing, grouping, summaries, and more. One of the most innovative features of the grid is the ability to customize the column elements within a grid. This means you can create different layouts, styles, and interactions for each column or cell in the grid. What Is An Angular Grid Column-Based Feature? Angular Grid's column-based features refer to the functionalities and capabilities related to columns in the data grid. As for the actual column features examples, these are the top 5 I believe bring the most value and I consider it vital for each Grid component. They include multi-column headers, collapsible column headers, column selection, column pinning, and column summaries. More About Angular Grid Column-Based Features & How To Use Them Multi-column headers Using multi-column headers in your Angular Grid allows you to group columns by placing them under common multi-headers. Each multi-column headers group could be a representation of combinations between other groups or columns within the Grid. Collapsible column headers Adding on top of the multi-column headers, you provide a way for having interactions with the groups. With this feature, it's possible to collapse/expand, i.e. to show and hide the nested headers under the current one, which will give you shortened/summarized information, for example. This improves the UI a lot, and the amount of content you show, and enables you to interact with it. Column Selection The Column selection feature provides an easy way to select an entire column with a single click. It emphasizes the importance of a particular column by focusing on the header cell(s) and everything below. The feature comes with a rich API that allows for manipulation of the selection state, data extraction from the selected fractions, data analysis operations, and visualizations. A good example of a working sample would be: Column Pinning Ignite UI for Angular Library allows end-users to lock columns in a particular column order. This will allow them to see it while horizontally scrolling the Angular Grid. Column Summaries It functions on a per-column level as a group footer. Angular grid summaries are a powerful feature that enables the user to see column information in a separate container with a predefined set of default summary items, depending on the type of data within the column or by implementing a custom angular template in the Grid. In Summary Suppose you’re looking for better ways to create interactive and data-rich grids in your web apps with things like customization, usability, performance, and accessibility. In that case, the Angular Grid can bring tons of column-based features to empower you to achieve it. In this article, I have quickly demonstrated how to use five features of Angular Grid that allow you to customize the column elements within a grid. These features enable you to create more dynamic and user-friendly grids that handle complex data-driven scenarios.
