Using the GetCellValue Method Instead of Referencing Cell Values Directly
The WinGrid does not create UltraGridCell objects for every row of data. Cells are only created as neccessary. So whenever possible, accessing a cell should be avoided. For example, consider the following code that is placed in the InitializeRow event of the grid with the intent to calculate a total. Since this code references three cells per row directly, each cell that gets referenced is being lazily created in memory.

If you wish to avoid the lazy creation of these cells, you can use the GetCellValue method located on the row. This method is designed to simply return specific cell values while avoiding the lazy creation of the entire cell object in memory thus resulting in memory savings.

Re-using Appearances
Consider applying a custom Appearance to a cell based on the Value of that cell. Applying an Appearance to a cell requires getting a reference to the UltraGridCell, so that is unavoidable. However memory can be saved by re-using the same Appearance object for multiple cells. For example, consider you want to change the ForeColor of a cell to red for negative numbers and black for positive numbers. The bigger problem here is that the Appearance property on the cell is also lazily created. This means that for each cell you specifically access, memory is being allocated and used and a new Appearance object for each row is also being created. Also, there are only two possible colors, but we end up creating a large number of identical appearance objects.
If you want to reduce the memory footprint of this type of operation, a better way to do this is to create the Appearances objects that we need up front and then re-use them whenever needed. Another benefit to this approach is that if you change any properties of your single Appearance instance, any object that is using that Appearance will change. In other words, if you have 200 Cells referencing the same Appearance object, changing the property values of that one Appearance object will cause all 200 Cells to change. For example, you might want to use Green instead of Black for positive numbers. The ForeColor of the Positive Appearance object can be set at run-time, and every cell that referenced that Appearance would update automatically.
